![]() ![]() Even 50 years after its initial release, it remains a bracing and challenging listen. With its needle-pinning assault of overdriven instruments, and lyrics about methamphetamine abuse (the title track), botched medical procedures (“Lady Godiva’s Operation”), grisly violence (“The Gift”), cries from beyond the grave (“I Heard Her Call My Name”) and heroin-dealing drag queens (“Sister Ray”), White Light/White Heat was all about pushing the boundaries of sound and taste. Recorded in a short flurry of studio sessions in September 1967, and released on January 30th, 1968, White Light/White Heat – the band’s final studio album with co-founder and multi-instrumentalist John Cale – boasted none of the louche charm of the Velvets’ 1967 debut, The Velvet Underground & Nico nor, for that matter, did it contain any of the hushed melodicism heard on the band’s self-titled 1969 LP, and it was utterly devoid of any instant classic-rock anthems like “Sweet Jane” and “Rock and Roll” from 1970’s Loaded. “But there it is forever – the quintessence of articulated punk. “No one listened to it,” said Lou Reed of the LP in 2013, just a few months before his death. 8.Of all of the Velvet Underground‘s officially released studio and live albums, White Light/White Heat is by far the noisiest and most difficult.SISTER RAY (LIVE AT THE GYMNASIUM, NEW YORK CITY, APRIL 30, 1967)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) RUN RUN RUN (LIVE AT THE GYMNASIUM, NEW YORK CITY, APRIL 30, 1967)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) I’M WAITING FOR THE MAN (LIVE AT THE GYMNASIUM, NEW YORK CITY, APRIL 30, 1967)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) GUESS I’M FALLING IN LOVE (LIVE AT THE GYMNASIUM, NEW YORK CITY, APRIL 30, 1967) ANYMORE (LIVE AT THE GYMNASIUM, NEW YORK CITY, APRIL 30, 1967) I’M NOT A YOUNG MAN (LIVE AT THE GYMNASIUM, NEW YORK CITY, APRIL 30, 1967)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) (LIVE AT THE GYMNASIUM, NEW YORK CITY, APRIL 30, 1967) THE GIFT (MONO VERSION)(INSTRUMENTAL VERSION)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) THE GIFT (MONO VERSION)(VOCAL VERSION)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) HERE SHE COMES NOW (MONO VERSION)(MONO SINGLE MIX) WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT (MONO VERSION)(MONO SINGLE MIX) BEGINNING TO SEE THE LIGHT (STEREO VERSION)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED EARLY VERSION) RAIN (STEREO VERSION) (VERSION TWO)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) RAIN (STEREO VERSION)(VERSION ONE)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) STEPHANIE SAYS (STEREO VERSION)(ORIGINAL MIX) TEMPTATION INSIDE YOUR HEART (STEREO VERSION)(ORIGINAL MIX) GUESS I’M FALLING IN LOVE (STEREO VERSION)(INSTRUMENTAL VERSION)(PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED) I HEARD HER CALL MY NAME (STEREO VERSION)(ALTERNATE TAKE) I HEARD HER CALL MY NAME (STEREO VERSION) FRANCE Order: White Light / White Heat (Super Deluxe Edition).GERMANY Order: White Light / White Heat (Super Deluxe Edition).USA Pre-order: White Light/White Heat – Super Deluxe Edition.UK Pre-order: White Light / White Heat – Super Deluxe Edition. ![]() This edition was developed in conjunction with Lou Reed and John Cale. Within the pages will be plenty of the rare photos, pictures of memorabilia and a David Fricke Essay/interview with John Cale and Lou Reed from 2013. The hard bound book was a particular highlight last year, and the shape and size look to have been repeated for the White Light / White Heat Super Deluxe. One of the highlights will be the band’s complete show at The Gymnasium in New York, recorded on April 30, 1967, which includes five previously unreleased performances culled from John Cale’s personal copy. In 2012 we had 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico (a six CD set) and this year the 1968 follow-up White Light / White Heat will be available as a three-disc deluxe package.Īlthough this new set can’t match the breadth of material on offer last year, the White Light/White Heat 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition will still offer ten previously unreleased tracks, amongst the thirty that are on offer. For the second year in a row, a Velvet Underground Super Deluxe Edition will be available for purchase in the run up to Christmas. ![]()
